Las Beatas’ shooting is located in the heart of La Mancha, close to the town of Villahermosa and is reached by an easy three-hour drive from Madrid.
Set up by Alberto Muela over 30 years ago, he and his son Jesus Alberto, run one of the finest shoots in Spain. The shoot is well-established and has been frequented by many of the world’s most discerning shots which speaks volumes for the quality of the organisation.
The season runs from mid-October until early February.
Shooting
There is an enormous variety of shooting at Las Beatas with drives suitable for all abilities and plenty to test the most experienced of guns. To give some idea of the scale, the shooting extends to over more than 30,000 hectares and there are as many as 18 keepers employed at any one time.
Drives range from the traditional Spanish style, where birds can be taken well out in front, to drives where partridges are driven off the top of steep ravines. The terrain is dotted with gullies and rocky outcrops, which makes for some dramatic scenery.
Guns are driven in four wheel drives and the walking to the pegs is fairly straightforward and similar to what you might expect on many shoots in the UK.
Unlike shooting in the UK, where you may stay on an estate and start shooting right outside the front door, the extensive nature of the shooting at Las Beatas can mean that you may drive for anything from 30 minutes up to an hour to the shooting area for the day.
Food and Lodging
Las Beatas
The main accommodation for shooting parties is at Las Beatas. Ideal for any shooting party, the finca has 24 bedrooms each with its own bathroom.
There is a spacious living room with a fireplace, where guns tend to gather, and a bar area for guests to help themselves to an ample supply of drinks.
The dining room can comfortably seat 20 or more and food is international with both meat and fish dishes.
La Cuesta de la Borracha
La Cuesta has been recently built to accommodate shooting parties. The lodge is on the top of a hill with commanding views over some of the most dramatic drives that Las Beatas can offer.
The finca has 14 rooms with ensuite bathrooms which are all furnished and decorated simply, but to a standard that is more than adequate for a shooting party.
There is a large open-plan living room and dining area set around a large fireplace. Again, guests are able to help themselves from the bar making for a relaxed and convivial shooting party atmosphere.
Depending on where you stay and where you are shooting that day, lunches may be back at the finca or more likely elsewhere in the field.
