Hasparren is in the Rio Negro region of west-central Uruguay, 300km from Montevideo, the country's capital city.
It is a beautiful thatched, stone house and is known for its walked-up perdiz and dove shooting. The season is limited to May, June and July.
Bernardo Barran is the owner of the ranch and he has successfully been looking after shooting guests’ needs for many years. He takes particular interest in the training of the pointing dogs and he and his wife, Mercedes, are expert hosts.
The drive to Hasparren from Montevideo is 3½ hours’ long, over good roads and through beautiful, rural country.
As an option, you can charter directly to the landing strip at Hasparren, which is a great time-saver. Charters can originate from either Montevideo or Buenos Aires.
Shooting
Hasparren offers a variety of species including perdiz, dove and pigeon that makes Uruguay a very unique destination.
Each morning, guests walk-up wild perdiz in short grass fields over pointers and English setters. Afternoons are spent dove shooting: flighting them on their way back to a roost.
On some mornings or afternoons (generally during June and July), big, wild pigeons are substituted for doves or perdiz by decoying them in the fertile, grain fields nearby. The season for perdiz runs from May to July.
Every day you will drive to the perdiz fields, and return for lunch at the lodge, or occasionally you may stay for an asado in the field.
The afternoon dove flight starts after lunch, and ends at dusk.
Driving time to the shooting locations is usually between 10 and 20 minutes for the perdiz or pigeon fields, and from 15 minutes up to an hour for the dove shooting.
Food and Lodging
Hasparren can cater for a maximum of eight guns in four double and one single room, each with their own private bathroom.
The lodge has cosy log fires and guests congregate around them in the living and sitting rooms before moving to the dining room for meals. You cannot help but feel at home at Hasparren.
